How to get reimbursed by your insurance company:

Step 1: Call Your Insurance Company

The first thing you need to do is call your insurance company. Look on the back of your insurance card—you’ll see a phone number for member services. Call that number and get ready to ask some questions about your out-of-network benefits (this means your insurance might help pay for a therapist (me) who isn’t in their network).

Not all insurance plans cover out-of-network therapy, so your first question should be:

“Does my plan cover out-of-network mental health care, like therapy?”

If they say yes, that’s great! That means you might be able to get some money back. If they say no, that means your insurance will only cover therapists that are in their network, and you won’t get reimbursed from our sessions.

Some insurance plans make you pay a certain amount of money before they start reimbursing you. This is called a deductible. Ask:

“Do I have a deductible for out-of-network therapy? If so, how much do I have left to pay before my insurance starts paying me back?”

For example, if your deductible is $1,000 and you’ve only paid $300 for therapy so far, you still have $700 to go before insurance will start helping with the costs.

Once your deductible is met, your insurance will start reimbursing you, but they won’t cover the full cost. You’ll want to ask:

“How much will my plan pay back for a therapy session?”

Therapists use special codes when billing insurance. A common one is 90837, which means a full therapy session (about 50 minutes or more). If the insurance rep doesn’t give a clear answer, ask:

“What’s the maximum amount you allow for therapy code 90837? And what percentage of that will you pay me back?”

An Easy Example

Let’s say:

  • Your insurance company says the maximum allowed amount for a therapy session is $125.

  • They cover 70% of that amount.

  • Your therapist charges $150 per session.

Your insurance will not cover 70% of the full $150—only 70% of their maximum allowed amount ($125).

So your reimbursement is: 70% of $125 = $87.50

That means even though you paid $150, your insurance will send you $87.50 back, so your actual cost is $62.50 per session.

If you want to start therapy but need help figuring out insurance, I can help. Let’s find a way to make it work for you.
